New Voice Club at Borough of Manhattan
Community College (BMCC)
On November
17, 2012, three members of the New Voice Club of the Niagara Frontier were
invited to discuss their respective experiences at the Borough of Manhattan
Community College (BMCC). Members of the club graciously volunteer their
time to visit schools and motivate students to quit smoking, or better yet, to
never start smoking at all.
Joe, Carl
and Clarence shared their stories of hope and inspiration, while conveying
their personal consequences of tobacco use. Over 200 students, faculty,
staff and volunteers were deeply touched by their powerful cautionary
messages. One student was so motivated to quit smoking that he
immediately threw out his pack of cigarettes.
The
speakers express their gratitude to the BMCC Health Education Department and
Professor Irasema De Jesus, who made this event possible.
We send our
warmest thanks to Joe, Carl and Clarence for sharing their experiences and
making a difference in the lives of others.

head and neck function due to cancer. The basket drawing for the New Voice Club was a HUGE SUCCESS, with 31 baskets and $580.00 raised. Funds raised will go to support a loan closet where supplies for laryngectomees are available for those in need, as well as to help defray costs incurred with the visitation and onsite school programs, where members talk with young adults about the dangers of tobacco products. New Voice members were on hand to answer questions and provide encourage for tobacco users to become tobacco free. They even took time to speak with the school’s baseball team, who have about 85% of the players using chew! In addition to raising money, the day was filled with conversation, laughter, inspiration and hope.
