LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants, upon completion of this course, should be able to:

  1. Identify the special needs of adult smokers and consider the use of physician and patient materials targeted to this population.
  2. Assess a patient's "readiness to change", using a popular model of behavioral change
    called "The Stages Of Change".
  3. Learn strategies to help motivate patients to change their behavior.
  4. Follow national guideline recommendations for clinician-patient intervention, called "The 5-A Model": Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange. This simple algorithm provides structure to a clinically effective, brief intervention.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This internet-based activity is intended for primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other specialists who care for patients that use tobacco products.

GOAL

The goal of this activity is to provide primary care physicians and other health care professionals with current knowledge in smoking cessation techniques, and how to apply a guideline based approach to encourage tobacco cessation and enhance patient care.
